The Stork
by Passionaria Stoicescu (b. 1946)

The Stork’s an absolutely cool girl…

None is svelter

In the Delta –

She’ll shriek, she’ll jog, she’ll comb the bog

In search of the odd fish and frog.

She walks around

Touching the ground

With one foot at a time, therefore

Her feet are never ever sore.

She diligently builds her nest

In yonder willow where she’ll rest.

When she has hatched her gold-downed brood,

She feeds them all

Till they grow tall –

No other bird’s chicks look so good.

Her legs are sleek, she’s got a beak

Hard as nails and pretty long.

The Stork’s an absolutely cool girl –

She’s not unlike a little school girl

Briskly hop scotching along.
